I would love to say that all of my students will learn Spanish by the end of their elementary journey, but the reality is that they probably will not. Much like ESL students it would take our students three years in a Spanish immersion course to acquire basic interpersonal communication skills (according to Krashen and Cumming's language acquisition
studies). Although I am very aware of this theory I still have high expectations for my students and they have risen to the challenges.

I have been very impressed by our students and their willingness to explore the language in the very little time we are together. They have also shown a great appreciation and eagerness to learn the culture and the traditions of the many Spanish speaking countries. To me that is my ultimate goal as a Spanish teacher in elementary, to instill a love to learn a new language and other cultures. To be open-minded and accepting of others. To just love to learn.
