El Dia de los Muertos

One of my favorite things to share with our students is the culture and history of the Spanish speaking world.   These next two weeks we will be learning about a special holiday, El Dia de los Muertos.  A holiday that has Mesoamerican roots and is a lively celebration of life and death.

Spanish in the classrooms

It can be a difficult task to teach a new language to young ones but with the help of teachers the skills learned can be a continuous experience that becomes a permanent part of their days.  Here are a few examples of how Roberts teachers are supporting the second language learner.

Mrs. Punch takes it to a whole new level having most of her regular boards in both languages!

Mrs. May's calendar time includes Spanish weather words.

Mrs. Wayman's class Spanish section!  My favorite decor so far!

Mr. Shahriari's space theme is inspiring!

Mrs. Punch even has the basics like numbers and colors in both Spanish and English.  Amazing work!

Mrs. May has a whole door dedicated to what we have learned in Spanish.

Mrs. Peng has even labeled the area in Spanish. (We will correct that "n".)  LOL!

Mrs. Sheets has a whole workstation area with books flash cards and other activities!  Above and beyond!!

I am so grateful that the teachers have embraced the second language learning process and will continue to highlight some of their great efforts.

¡Bienvenidos de regreso a la escuela!

Welcome back amigos!

I hope you all had a great summer!  I know I did! This will be our second year together and I am super excited about getting started in our language adventure.  I hope you guys had a chance to review some of your Spanish vocabulary.  This week I have been asking you to give me at least one Spanish word that you remember from last year and i have been very impressed.  :) Kiss your brains!

My Summer:

I was lucky enough to travel to Costa Rica this summer.  As many of you may remember we read, acted out, and created a project with a story titled "Salva la Selva."  The story was about saving the forest because it was the "casa" of many animals and plants. Well, I must report that indeed it is "¡La case de muchos animals y plantas!"  I can't wait to share all about my adventure with you! I also can't wait to hear all about your summer adventures too!  Hasta luego amigos!

El Dia de San Valentin

This past week the students have been enjoying Valentine centered activities that incorporated preciously learned skills,  Third grade created cards in which they wrote sentences with conjugated    -AR verbs.  While first and second grade made positive heart puzzles with the phrase "Me gusta" and newly learned valentine vocabulary. While fourth and fifth grade students tested their listening skills to complete the lyrics of Fonseca's Te Mando Flores.

Spanish Day

Our first annual Spanish day was full of fun activities for our students.  They created crafts, watched a few acts and listened to a story. I am so thrilled to have the opportunity to do Spanish Day, but of course it would not have been possible without the wonderful volunteers.  A special thanks to those moms who worked the day of and behind he scenes to get everything perfect.
